About Brisbane Brisbane is Australia’s third largest city and boasts a sub-tropical climate. The city centre is comprised of a number of diverse precincts, including the Queen Street Mall, Fortitude Valley, South Bank, Roma Street Parklands, Kangaroo Point Cliffs and the Botanic Gardens. The city is bisected by the Brisbane River, which is best enjoyed via one of the City Cat or Inner City ferry services. Both the Sunshine and Gold Coasts, with beautiful beaches and mountainous hinterlands, are little more than an hour’s drive from Brisbane’s CBD. Early July is a particularly pleasant time of year with temperatures ranging from 16-24C. For more information about Brisbane, please visit: http://www.ourbrisbane.com/visitors/
Getting to Brisbane Brisbane International and Domestic Airports are located 15-20 minutes drive (approximately 13km) from the CBD. Most major airlines operate international services to Brisbane. An Airtrain service links both the domestic and international terminals with the CBD (Central and Roma Street Stations). Visit www.airtrain.com.au for more information. Taxi ranks are also located at both terminals. The fare to the CBD is approximately $33, with a $2 fee for departing taxis. This is an estimate only and subject to prices at the time of the conference.
Getting to the conference Aside from taxis, you can catch a ferry, bus and train. The CityCat ferry service travels both up and down the Brisbane River. There are several stops in the CBD and another at Toowong and the ferry service terminates at the University of Queensland. CityCat services are frequent, particularly on weekdays. If you are staying in the CBD or South Bank, the best bus service to catch to the university is the 109, which leaves from George Street in the CBD, outside the Brisbane City Council building, and travels via the Cultural Centre, South Bank and Mater Hill. This service is very frequent. If you are staying in Toowong, Auchenflower or St Lucia, catch the 412 or 411. Other bus services also travel to the university along different routes, depending on the location of your accommodation. Depending on where you are staying, you can also catch a train – if you do, you will still need to catch a bus to the university campus.
