Grants and Awards in Canadian Studies The following grants are available to academics or postgraduates in Australia and New Zealand, to conduct research in/on Canada and, in some cases, to promote teaching and publications about Canada or facilitate workshops between researchers in Canada and abroad. Most grant applications are administered by the Canadian High Commission in Canberra. Other funding opportunities are available to organisations seeking to develop a program in Canadian Studies, host a thematic conference on Canada or develop student exchange or internship opportunities. Research must be in Canadian Studies and related to the student's thesis topic. The value of each grant is up to A$3000. Available to ACSANZ members only (new members welcome).
ACSANZ Canadian Studies Undergraduate Essay Prize Deadline: 30 October The essay must be on Canada or have a substantial Canadian component (e.g. a comparative study between Canada and another country/region) and be submitted by an undergraduate student enrolled in any faculty at universities in Australia and New Zealand. Entries should aim to demonstrate an understanding of Canada. We welcome entries from across a broad range of faculties, however the competition is especially suited to the humanities and social sciences. Students are encouraged to submit an essay which has been prepared as part of their assessment for an undergraduate course. The competition has a cash prize of AUD $1,200.
Canada-Asia-Pacific Award (CAPA) Deadline: 24 November This award aims to promote research activities in areas relevant to the bilateral and multilateral relationships between Canada and the countries of the Asia-Pacific region. The award supports scholars in universities or research institutes in the Asia-Pacific region to undertake short-term research, including collaborative research. The award will assist with direct costs related to the research project, and, when a research trip to Canada is warranted, will provided assistance towards international airfare and a weekly flat rate allowance for a maximum of five weeks. The value of the award is between C$5,000 and C$10,000. Up to two awards are made annually.
Doctoral Student Research Award (DSRA) Deadline: 3 November This award is designed to assist full-time graduate students at degree-granting institutions of higher education, whose dissertations are related in substantial part to Canada, to undertake doctoral research about Canada. The purpose is to increase knowledge and understanding of Canada and to support the development of Canadian Studies.
Faculty Enrichment Program (FEP) Deadline: 3 November For academics in higher education institutions to develop and teach courses about Canada, including comparative courses where not less than 50% of the teaching time is spent on the Canadian portion. The maximum amount is C$6,200. It assists with international airfares, domestic travel and living expenses for up to four weeks.
Faculty Research Program (FRP) Deadline: 3 November For individual academics in universities and research institutes to undertake short-term research about Canada or aspects of Canada's bilateral relations with Australia and New Zealand, including interdisciplinary and comparative studies. The maximum value of this award is C$6,200. It assists with international airfares, domestic travel and living expenses for up to four weeks.
ICCS Best Doctoral Thesis in Canadian Studies Deadline: 30 September This International Council for Canadian Studies (ICCS) Award is designed to recognize and promote each year an outstanding PhD thesis on a Canadian topic, written by a member (or one of his/her students) of a Canadian Studies Association or Associate Member, and which contributes to a better understanding of Canada. ICCS Canadian Studies Postdoctoral Fellowships Deadline: 30 September This program enables Canadian and foreign academics who have completed a doctoral thesis on a topic primarily related to Canada to visit a Canadian or foreign university with a Canadian Studies program for a teaching or research fellowship. Fellowships are for a minimum of one month and a maximum of three months. Applicants must not be employed in a full-time university teaching position and must agree not to accept honoraria or salary during their fellowships. The grant will be C$2,500 per month plus the cost of a return airline ticket.
ICCS Graduate Student Scholarship Deadline: 30 September Up to ten grants are awarded world-wide to Masters and Doctoral candidates to undertake thesis-related research on Canada at a Canadian university for 4-6 weeks. Up to C$3,500 is available for all expenses.
Deadline: 24 November The Publishing Fund assists with the publication and distribution of scholarly monographs on Canada written by foreign Canadianists who are members of a Canadian Studies Association or Associate Member belonging to the International Council for Canadian Studies. This fund assists foreign Canadianists by granting financial aid to a recognized scholarly press once the work is published.
The World Seminar, held every second year in Canada,
brings together students who are pursuing their PhD
studies or who have recently successfully completed
their PhD on a Canadian subject. The Seminar focuses on
traditional Canadian Studies issues, in particular,
issues currently of major importance to Canada, and
provides a forum for participants to communicate their
insights on Canada to a wider audience. During the
seminar participants have the opportunity to present and
discuss their research findings in a conference setting,
open to the public, and where government, university,
political, and media representatives will be invited.
While academic excellence is one of the aims of the
seminar, it also allows participants to enhance their
understanding of Canada and Canadian society. Four
master classes on key issues in Canadian society,
relating to the political, social, economic and cultural
spheres are also given by Canadian specialists.
International Research Linkages (IRL) Deadline: 24 November This program aims to promote and facilitate international collaborative research by providing assistance to teams of researchers from Canada and from Australia or New Zealand in order to organise seminars or other forms of research linkages. Project proposals must be submitted on behalf of two research teams (one in Canada and one elsewhere) and each research team must consist of two or more researchers, with at least one having completed graduate studies. Research must be in the field of Canadian Studies, which can include work of a comparative nature in which Canada represents a substantial part. The maximum value of the award is C$10,000. Smaller grants may be made.
